Abstract
This study is to examine the relationship between social supports and quality of life(Q0L) of hemodialysis patients. Data were drawn from a convenient sample of 148 pattents on hemodialysis who were visiting to medical facilities in Seoul Metropolitan Area and its vicinity, including three university-affiliated hospitals and a clinic. Data were collected by a self-administrated survey at the facilities from April 4 to May 7, 2005. Social supports incorporated supports from family and medical staffs. The respondents reported a moderate level of QOL(mean 3.1 out of 5) and bivariate analyses showed no statistically significant differences of QOL in terms of sociodemographic categories. Perceived social supports from medical staffs were not greater than those from family members. Multiple regression analyses by stepwise method identified factors associated with hemodialysis patients. They were social supports from family and nephritis with diabetes mellitus. The relationship between family social supports and QOL was a positive and small in its size. The regression models failed to observe a significant relationship between social supports from medical staffs and QOL.
